How to Get The Required Teaching Credentials
Every state has their own set of teaching credential requirements. Before you can teach, you need to be holding one of these teaching credentials: Single Subject Credential, Education Specialist Credential, and Multiple Subject Credential.If you are holding a Multiple Subject Credential, you have the authority to teach inside a classroom wherein one teacher handles different subjects, academic or otherwise. Usually, this credential is applied to a grade school teaching environment.
For Single Subject Teaching Credentials, you can only teach the subject of your specialty. This is applied to both high school and junior high school students, and anywhere else that follows a departmentalized form of instruction.
Holders of Education Specialist Teaching Credentials are allowed to teach in schools wherein the audiences are adults and children with certain disability. The Education Specialist Credential is further classified into mild or moderate and moderate or severe. There is also an Early Childhood Special Education Specialist Credential for those who wanted to teach autistic toddlers, pre-school, and even infants.
Now before you can be granted one of these teaching credentials, you have to complete the prescribe requirements of each. The first requirement would be the completion of a baccalaureate degree in any field other than the education degree that you are holding. It should also be gained from an accredited university or college.
A special program of professional training is also required. The training would include teaching in a supervised environment and several performance assessments. The training can be integrated in to education degree you took, usually in the fourth or fifth year.
A certain test of comprehension, critical thinking, mathematics skills, and writing should also be taken and passed. It could differ from one state to another, but it will always be under a state government-approved testing center.
