Question by Rain: Is Boston a good city for jobs in Higher Education?
I am currently a graduate student in a midwestern university studying higher education administration and student affairs. My degree prepares me for careers in administration positions in colleges and universities (my specialization is working w international students).

I have always been interested in living in Boston. Are there opportunities for jobs in higher ed in Boston? More or less than in other parts of the country?

Also, how is Boston for young professionals? Is there lots to do and plenty of younger people to meet?

well boston is full of colleges from ivy league schools to state schools, whether or not ehy are hiring is another question….as far as young professionals go, sure its a great pl;ace for young pro’s–its a very progressive forward thinking city

Question by Sarah Kate: What’s the purpose of Teach For America if there’s a shortage of teaching jobs for education majors?
I hear that it is tough to get a teaching job, but then why do we have Teach For America, where non-education majors can be placed in a teaching job immediately after college?

A lot of people are asking that question right now, for exactly that reason. But keep in mind that the current job shortage is not because there isn’t a NEED for teachers, but because the districts can’t afford to pay them due to the bad economy. If they shut down the program, starting it up again later will be extremely expensive, so right now everyone is looking to see if Teach for America was worthwhile when the economy was stronger. There is a lot of evidence that a very high percentage of TFA participants quit and leave teaching within less than three years, so that would suggest that perhaps it isn’t the pipelne to training permanent teachers that the founders had hoped it would be.

Obama Pitches His Last Bill In Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Education spending will be the focus today as President Barack Obama makes the case for passage of his proposed 7 billion American Jobs Act in Columbus, where he will visit a high school undergoing a modernization project. The plan, which Obama announced last week, calls for billion for school infrastructure — billion for upgrading at least 35000 existing public facilities, including charter schools, plus billion for community colleges — and billion to save or retain educator jobs, including 5.5 million to support as many as 12800 educator jobs in Ohio, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said. In addition, Ohio could receive 8.3 million for its community colleges in the next fiscal year, he noted. Of the funding, 40% will go to the nation’s 100 largest school districts. That includes funds that will be directed at the state’s four largest districts: Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo. Carmel Martin, assistant education secretary for planning, evaluation and policy development, said 60% of the funds will then be distributed to each state based on their student population and overall population. The state can distribute half of those funds through a competitive process to the neediest districts and the other half based on Title I poverty guidelines. “Today the digital age has penetrated every nook of American life, with the exception of too many of our pubic schools,” Duncan said during a conference call with reporters …

That is a big question. If you can learn it, there is someone to teach it, correct?

Earlychildhood teaching positions (ages 3-8)
Elementary Teacher (K-6th grade)
Middle School (11-14 year olds)
High Schools (14-18)
Technical School Personnel and teachers (plumbing, hairstylists, trade people)
Administration or supervisory positions such as heads of daycares.
Educational Training positions for companies
Educational Researchers based on specific skill sets you have or acquire
Educational Publishing House/Magazine writer or contributor
Tutor

Who is a special education teacher? A special education teacher is someone who is involved with teaching children with some disabilities varying from minor disabilities to major impairments. This job requires a lot of seriousness and background work.

But if you are here, then possibly you know all this already.

What you need to know is if you have what it takes to be a special education teacher. There are a few prerequisites for this job. It is expected that you have a strong sense of responsibility, are passionate about helping these children and ready to sacrifice petty issues for the greater cause.

If you think you have it in you, then here is how you can go on to fulfilling your dream.

Get Experience.

The moment you decide you are going for an education job with the special children, start getting experience. Working as a para-educator, that is working in a classroom side by side with a special education teacher as his or hr assistant is a good idea.

Get a Degree.

It is sad, but the truth is that there are few universities that offer courses in special education. Try and get into one of these if you will. Otherwise your only option is to get your bachelors’ degree in a relevant subject. This subject might vary from Math, English to smarter options like Sociology, Psychology etc.

Pick a Specific Disability to Focus on.

There are a number of disabilities. Do your research and find out which one you think you want to work with, and more importantly you will be able to work with. Teaching jobs for special children might mean teaching ones with emotional disabilities or physical. Disabilities may very from minor to moderate to severe. Impairment of speech, hearing and vision are also included as disabilities which will mean that you will need to teach yourself their language in order to communicate better.

Take the Praxis.

The Praxis II teaching examination for special education is something you will have to clear with flying colors. Different states will demand different scores for a teaching job that they might have to offer you. So plan ahead and do well in the exam.

Do an Internship.

Doing an internship in other fields and doing one in special education are different ballgames altogether. Doing an internship in special education means you will have to work full time in some classroom and will be expected to take your classes at the same time. This may sound taxing, but consider having a 2 years worth of work experience when you finish your course and it might seem a good idea. Add to it a good pay packet and there is no reason why you shouldn’t go for an internship.

Apply for a Job.

This will possibly be the easiest step yet. A teaching job in the field of special education is not hard to get provided you have followed the instructions well. Competition is less and opportunities are many. You are sure to be employed, and happily so with a very rewarding and noble profession.

Thanks for asking. I am in Lexington and one of the most beautiful places in America. Richmond is a small (med size) college town. The weather here is very much 4 seasons. Was very cold for about a month this year. You will need a lot of money to purchase 3 acres in Lexington (Fayette County). The outlying counties have less expensive property. The cost of living here is quite modest. Homes are also much more reasonably priced. Welcome to Kentucky. Further questions, please let me know.

I was considering getting an Ed.D and going into an education administration career, but I was wondering how in demand this kind of job would be. I’d like to work on a college or university level. If you’re going to get into this kind of job is teaching experience required in most cases? Anything you can tell me would help. Do you want to work or teach at the university level? If you think you want to teach some time in your career you should get a PhD because there’s more research requirements attached to that degree. If you mean is teaching experience required to work at a college like in student affairs, no, you don’t need prior teaching experience. It is a job that’s in demand, it’s been on a list in 2009 and 2010 (I only have the link to the ‘09 one saved).
