Find Me A Job, I Can’t Afford To Wait 6 Months For Work – Rapid Local Job Search

Local job search: 4 1/2 to 8 months is the average amount of time a job search is taking in the US today.  Many job seekers find that demoralizing, how can you go into a job interview standing tall and being the person your next company needs?

Why does your job search have to be average?  How can you develop an edge that will take you to the front of the line and help you rapidly generate job leads and then hone the other skills you need to get you that job?

We are talking about three basic skills:

Find job leads Cover letter and resume The interview

If you learn what it takes to get an edge in each of these areas then your job search will produce a better job for you and produce it more quickly than just an average search.

Job search sites abound and that is part of the problem.  So many choices and different jobs on many of them.  The other problem is how fresh are the leads.  Still this is a good place to begin.  There are also sites like Indeed.com that scrape leads from other site, newspapers, and anywhere they can find them.  Check these out as well.  Consider networking sites like Linkedin.com.  Many have found these kinds of sites very effective.  Later we’ll give you some information about where to find out how to automate job lead generation.

Your cover letter and resume are the next things that need to ‘tick’ for you.  Your cover letter is possibly the most important piece that you will write.  It is the primary agent to get your interview and to get your resume read.  Many resumes do not get proper attention because they are just there and look much like many others.  But the right cover letter will get you the shot you need.  Your cover letter should also ask for an interview.

Your resume needs to be well crafted and present you in the best light.  There are many resources and templates for building a resume.  Sometimes people get more involved with form and spend too much time picking out a template.  Just start with a blank page and do a reverse chronolgy of your employment history and highlight your key skills.  Add education and anything else you feel puts you in a good light for your prospective employer and you will soon have a resume that you can polish and put into whatever form you like - but don’t waste time on the trivial.

Remember that your cover letter and resume are agents to get you to the interview.  At the interview you become your own agent and it is up to you to land the job.  Be prepared with a smile and a firm handshake when you go into the interview.  Be prepared with knowledge of the company you intend to work for by having visited their website and having read about them on the web.

Be ready for common interview questions, learn what they are.  Even simple questions like, “why do you want to work here” have tripped up even the best job candidates.  But if you prepare that won’t be you.  Remember to not be negative about your old job, or people on the job, rather be forward looking and positive.

So why do you want that job?  Not just because you are out of work.  No you want it because you are building a future and you want to contribute while you advance your career.

No, your local job search does not have to be average.  Take just a little time and learn to do it better.

Tens of thousands of ex-pats have been laid off in the UAE and around the rest of the Gulf. But a new law in the UAE makes it almost impossible to fire Emirati nationals. At the moment, locals make up only 2 percent of the private sector workforce in their own country. So this may be their best opportunity of grabbing a bigger stake in it. But will they rise to the challenge? From Dubai, Ben Thompson reports
