There are many different kinds of jobs in special education, and they are all in great demand in most areas. I am a credentialed special education teacher in a self-contained classroom, with students ages 5 – 7 (basically, kindergarten through 2nd grade ages.) I have 2 assistants, who don’t have credentials but get specialized training so they can work effectively with the students. We also have specialists who work with our students: occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech & language specialists, adaptive physical education specialists, behavior specialists, and school psychologists.
There are jobs working with all ages of people who have disabilities, from infants through adults. Not all of the jobs are in school settings, and not all of the jobs require a teaching credential. But if you are interested in working with people who have special needs, there are lots of jobs.
