Q&A: Jobs prior to becoming a Special Education teacher?
3 Comments · Posted by admin in Special Education Jobs
Question by hope: Jobs prior to becoming a Special Education teacher?
I already have my Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies. I have always wanted to be a special education teacher, but i chose to be a paralegal instead. Now, after working as a paralegal, i know i made the wrong decision and would like to go back to school for special education. Are there any jobs in the profession that i can obtain while i’m in school working toward my degree? I would really like to gain experience working in the field. Preferably in Ohio area. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Gain A Degree In Special Education And Help Those Special Kids
To put children who are challenged and have special needs into the mainstream classrooms is not really an intelligent thing to do. Children with special needs require teachers with a special education degree. Professionals with a special education degree are rare these days and many administrators are finding it hard to recruit and hire these specially qualified teachers. There is a very desperate need for professionals who understand the various learning styles requires these for students who have learning disabilities. For anyone considering studying for such a degree a special education degree itself, will almost certainly guarantee long-term employment.
Question by jake122683: Special Education jobs available?
I am thinking about going into the Special Education job field. I have a Bachelor’s from Purdue in Psychology and will be getting my licensure from Indiana U. I want to do this because it seems like a enriching job. The only problem is, is this a job field that I can find a teaching job in rather easily. I feel that there are alot of misconceptions in the job market and I do not want to go into a field that is saturated.

Question by Chingona: Should I go into Special Education? Are jobs really that abundant?
First question – Should I and are jobs that abundant?
Second question -I want to get a Special Ed. license in Mild/Moderate disabilties and was wondering what areas of Special Education are there for someone who wants to work more one-on-one or small group? I really don’t want my own classroom.
I have a General Ed. credential and have also worked with special education students for the past 5 years.

Since the 1940s k-12 schools taught the whole language concept of reading- memorizing words, known as sight-reading. When we were a manufacturing society, sight-reading and memorization was the easy quick way to prepare people for the factory as basic reading skills were necessary. Unfortunately, whole language has virtually left generations of students functionally illiterate to struggle with reading every day in this highly complex world.

Special Education Teacher Jobs – Careers Explained
Have you ever wondered, “Just what does a special education teacher do?” This is a highly specialized teaching job that requires a special license on top of the necessary bachelor’s degree and teaching credential. Some states also require master’s degrees in education. There is a huge shortage for special education teachers at the moment, though, so some states are offering alternative licensure programs to those who qualify. These teachers work with learning disabled students in K-12 schools in a variety of settings, and sometimes they also work with 18 to 21-year-old students teaching basic job skills and life skills.
Special education jobs are one of the toughest jobs out there, but it is also one of the jobs that come with the most rewards. In a K-12 setting, the teacher will typically just modify the general education curriculum to meet the individual needs of their learning disabled students. When working with children with more serious disabilities, however, the teacher may have to instruct the students on basic literacy and life skills. Special Ed teachers who work with infants and toddlers are more focused on socialization and basic lessons that will help prepare the children to adjust to elementary, middle and secondary school.
Since there are so many students with learning disabilities, and more entering the school system every day, there are many career options for special educations teachers. Children with autism, traumatic brain injuries, deafness and/or blindness, emotional disturbances, mental retardation, speech and/or language impairments, orthopedic impairments, and multiple disabilities and specific learning disabilities may all need special attention in school. The techniques used range from small group assignments to problem solving to individual instruction. Teaching these students requires more than just fostering academic progress; the children must also progress behaviorally to succeed.
The qualifications and job specifics for special education teachers varies in each state and district. If you are interested in this rewarding job, your local school district should be able to provide more career information. It is a great time to pursue special education jobs since there is a great shortage of qualified teachers who have the desire to work with the learning disabled population.
